Marni Kotak will present a new performance entitled "My Birth" at the Alice Chilton Gallery, this Friday Night, February 11th at 8pm, in conjunction with the closing of her exhibition. In this live action, Kotak will undergo a public rebirthing ritual on her recently deceased grandmother's bed that the artist and her lover broke during sex. Typical of contemporary rebirthing practices, Kotak will employ cyclic breathing techniques in order to tap into and release traumatic memories stored in the deep reaches of her body consciousness. Starting from the recent past and moving deeper into her memory towards her birth, Kotak will re-experience traumatic events in her life, live in front of the audience, while simultaneously shedding layers of clothing, symbolic objects, documents and other memorabilia that relate to the distressing events, until she is ultimately bare and re-born. Leading her through this action will be her boyfriend, Jason Robert Bell, who will be present as a doctor/shaman/spiritual guide.

Also available at the closing will be a limited-edition book with photos and written commentary about each of the artist’s performances from birth to present, and quotes by contemporary artists, curators and art writers, as well as members of the artist’s family, that speak to the concept of everyday life as art.

In her installation at Alice Chilton Gallery, I Have To Get On With My Life: Marni Kotak’s Found Performances from Birth to Present, Kotak presents the major events in her life from birth to present within the context of a bedroom in a working class, New England town. The exhibit is installed in the style of her parents’ New England beach house utilizing household items that have been altered or imprinted with family photos, and includes photo plaques commemorating the ‘major performances’ conducted for each year of her life from 1974-2010.

Background on Marni Kotak

Marni Kotak is a Brooklyn-based performance artist who creates interactive multimedia works in which she presents her life as art. Recent bodies of work include her MyHouse project whereby she proclaims that everything that transpires in her home in Bushwick, Brooklyn to be art; her on-going Livesystems through which she markets her everyday activities online and sells advertising on her body; and her Found Performances – or re-enactments of real life experiences – the latest of which, Sunny Blue Plymouth (2010), was just held at Fountain Art Fair in Miami, and involved a re-enactment of losing her virginity in a glittery blue Plymouth Acclaim, as well as a collaboration with international performance art group NONGRATA to destroy that same car. Other Found Performances include Hot Water Bags (2010), a re-enactment of childhood sexual exploration, at Plato’s Cave, S’mores (2009), held as part of the 10th Annual Open Art International Performance Art Festival in Beijing, China, My Grandfather’s Funeral (2009) at English Kills Gallery, and How to French Kiss (2009) at Grace Exhibition Space.

The Alice Chilton Gallery is presenting an exhibition of new documentation, limited edition photographs, videos and catalogues by the Anonymous Boh of the Non Grata Group, which consists of over 40 international and anonymous members. ACG opened in 2009 with a show of works by Non Grata, and I believe it is important to keep up with this group, as they continue to expand their influence within the art world.

Their performances consist of lectures on the human condition, politics, economy and religion. They use the entire area they are performing to engage and interact with the audience. Their performances are wonderous spectacle lectures which delve deep into our psyches.

They are also extremely diligent about their documentation, with skillful photography and videotaping, which is edited and bound into large hard cover catalogues.

Around the name NON GRATA there have been different hushes and shushes for a long time. Already from the point of view of death of conventionalization of art, it has embodied the horrible and unwanted disembodiment of human person, from which the meaninglessness of nowadays art is pouring out. For those whose world of art starts from the point where the art world ends, NONGRATA has been a liberator, the orphic gap in this seemingly unalterable course, which however betrays us it is a cure from incest.

The main point of the ANONYMOUS BOH'S WORK is ethical - it is the image of primitivism, impersonality and experimental creativity. When working collaboratively, the performances of the Non Grata Group take place according to the logic of avoiding codes. The presentations are physical texts, whose ways of orthography and reading are kept within limits of reactions by the group members. Aesthetical and provocative challenges are represented in places Where the Art World doesn’t work

NON GRATA is an International performance group with over 40 members, mostly from Estonia but also from Quebec, Finland, Sweden, Germany, USA, France, Chile. The main characteristics of the members are ANONYMITY in group work, ignorance of local art world and mass media. NON GRATA has performed in Asia, Europe, South and North America with street actions and long lasting ghetto marathons.

About the exhibition:

Alice Chilton Gallery will present Sarah H. Paulson's latest body of performative drawings. The exhibition will feature Paulson's Orgasm Drawings, which document the time and quality of the artist's orgasms via delicate non-linear markings. Also displayed will be works from the Doily Series in which found doilies are paired with Paulson's menstrual blood.

An ongoing 2-hour performance will take place on Friday, October 15, 7-9pm atACG Gallery.

Bio:

Sarah H. Paulson lives and works in Brooklyn, NY. Her practice remains focused on The Performative. She creates drawings using her feet, or other body parts, and relies on environmental circumstances to dictate the duration of the act of mark-making. Such circumstances include the length of a song on the radio, the time it takes to reach orgasm, the movement of a dancing body on the television, or the length of time the artist can refrain from breathing, to name a few.

Currently, she is working on the Doily Series in which she uses her blood as an autobiographical instrument. In using found doilies, she recycles the homemade decorative fabric of what others created and later abandoned. These works are a gathering of the discarded and eliminated and an homage to single moments within a cycle.

As she archives personal experience, Paulson allows the boundaries and overlaps between past and present, sexual encounters, human interaction, violence, power, and public vs. private to surface. The works serve as documents of these private, or semi-private, performances.

Paulson also collaborates with Holly Faurot on large-scale, endurance-oriented performance artworks that exist between the realms of performance art and dance. Their work has been performed internationally in galleries/venues including NYCAMS (NY Center for Art & Media Studies), NY; English Kills Art Gallery, Brooklyn, NY; Ronald Feldman Fine Arts, NY; NurtureArt, Brooklyn, NY; The Chocolate Factory Theater, Brooklyn, NY; P.I.T. (Projects In Transit), Brooklyn, NY; EXIT ART, NY; the Harold Clurman Center for New Works in Movement and Dance Theatre at the Stella Adler Studio of Acting, NY; Open Art Gallery, Beijing, China, among others.

He Chungyao graduated from Arts Education Department at Sichuan Academy of Fine Art 1989, Chongqing, and lives and works in Beijing, China. He Chunayao is one of the fine examples of female Chinese contemporary artists in Chinese contemporary art history. From her works we can see how truly she relates what happened in her past has affected how she lives now. Through her works we can see how the changes of the last 30 years in China has affected how Chinese women live their lives in their country; in comparison with the different lives of women on the other side of the world. Let's give more love and care to the lower powerful people who live in the same world with us together.

In my live art and photography work of the past few years, I have been using art as a healing process, like the concept of spiritual catharsis in psychology. I use my own life story as my material, and starting with my family’s past I place my body and experiences into the work. I express this by changing into my mother as I imagined her as a child, reenacting painful memories in order to release suppressed pain and thereby purifying myself. The work explores how art can act as a healing agent, and at the same time attempts to discover the body’s material transformation from the past till the present. On the one hand my work is concerned with feminist issues, and explores the use of different materials to present these issues. On the other hand, I try to use process based interactive methods in my live art to give audiences different kinds of experiences, and to convey how the material and immaterial worlds can coexist within the context of personal and conceptual interaction.

In the autobiographical series: "Opens the Great Wall", "Mother And I", "Great Wall Magnolia - Mother And I", "99 Needles" clearly share the theme of treatment and subsequent redemption. Artist Myk Henry had an interview, photo shoot, and filming of his Jolt! retrospective at Alice Chilton Gallery today.

Henry explains his thought processes and intention behind his pieces as he gives a brief tour of the gallery space. This is an in depth view of the artist's major works as well as into the artist himself. Both interview and video are in the process of editing. They will be shared upon completion!

He Chengyao is a Bejing based artist, one of the few women performance artist in China today. Although at first an oil painter, Chengyao has moved onto the performance as her medium to focus on the themes of feminism in a male-dominated nation, mental illness and family, and nudity remaining a controversial subject in China, among other social issues.

MYK HENRY:

Myk Henry was born in Dublin, Ireland and moved to Williamsburg in 1986. He quickly became involved in the bohemian art scene and was responsible for organizing many large scale multi-media warehouse extravaganzas during Williamsburg’s pre-gentrification “Golden Era”. Henry was a pioneer of the “immersionist” movement which encouraged the public to touch art and discover their own creative abilities through experimentation.

In 1994 he moved to Geneva, Switzerland where he lived for 10 years and obtained a MFA from L'Ecole des Beaux Arts de Geneve (the school of visual arts) in 2002. He has won many of Switzerland’s top awards for contemporary art.

Mediums such as new media installation, sound sculpture, video and performance are used by Henry to engage the public and bring them to a heightened level of awareness about their own personal values and viewpoints. Provocation is used as a tool to jolt the spectator out of their normal comfort zone which creates an arena where various political issues, social stigmas, and stereotypes are questioned.

His performance work often requires the participation of the public. Henry believes that it is important for both the artist and spectator to be directly involved in the questioning process. He is especially interested in the thin divide between public and private space and through his artwork investigates the gauge of this boundary.

Myk Henry will be presenting a retrospective show at Grace Exhibition Space which will encompass a wide range of video installations, performance documentation and several intriguing live performances for the opening on June 4th. This show will then move to the Alice Chilton Gallery where it will re-open on June 11th and remain on display until July 4th.

The form of dollhouse evokes sweet, candy-colored ideals; minimally functional suggestions of perfection. A translation of wonder and possibility in a compartmentalized world. It is, perhaps, the structural representation of a child's mind. Eventually, this child grows and, subsequently, outgrows its scaled surroundings and takes that wonder to the outside. There, whether it lives or dies, it is always met with notions that, by contrast to the pure whimsy of the dollhouse, are grim in their truth, horrifying in their injustice. A sobering inevitability. But what would happen if as we grew, the comfortable confines of our dollhouse followed?

Our Dream House introduces audiences to a man-sized toy home. The installation, viewed in cross-section, provides refuge from a harsh, frenzied, giant media world that rages just beyond. This oversized dollhouse space is held to the same suggestive minimalism as its mini counterpart. When the environment activated, the house unsettles and unfolds, revealing itself and its living doll tenant. The room captures the life of a child’s imagination.

Elinor Famutimi creates habitat installations and other space-related pieces. Recent work includes the Star Ceiling (The Sky Is The Limit, February 2010), Sharing! (Media Lounge, December 2009), The Snoop Project (Brooklyn Artillery, Autumn 2009). Elinor is based in New York City.

Katherine Freer is a New York City-based video artist. In her work she explores the overlap of art, technology, and the physical world. Recent works include Remembering Mr. Maugham (The Clurman Theater, 2010), Flight (Media Lounge, December 2009), DNA (Hammond Museum, 2009).

Verena Stenke and Andrea Pagnes work together since 2006 as V e s t A n d P a g e mainly in the field of Performance Art, including techniques of installation, video, poetry and sound. They screen their video art and present their performances, lectures and workshops in Europe, Asia, South America and the U.S.
United, they found within Performance Art the perfect common ground to talk about topics they concern: impermanence, transformation, memory activation and a translative poetry.
They wish to arrive with the spectators to a shift of reality and time, touching most inner human sensors.

The German born Ve r e n a S t e n k e studied Fine Arts at Freie Kunstschule Stix, Heilbronn and Maskmaking & Makeup artistry at Mainfranken Theater Wuerzburg and at the Media&Event-Academy Baden-Baden. She trained martial arts, later Contemporary, Sufi and Butoh dance during her living in Berlin and Social Theatre with Isole Comprese Teatro, Firenze/I. She also works on sound and video.

The Venetian born A n d r e a P a g n e s has achieved his Master Diploma in Art Critic and Museology at the International Art University of Venice-Florence and his Degrees in Modern Literature and Philosophy at the University of Venice. Further he took the Social Theatre Actor Diploma from Isole Comprese Teatro, Florence in 2006, writing for them and performing the piece Corpo 1 Prologo, and then in 7 others. In the year 2008 he got the Diploma in Creative Writings (method Raymond Carver), Rome.
He published art essays, proses and poetry and worked as translator. He curated and coordinated international exhibitions in Munich, Cologne, Berlin, Venice, Bologna and Vancouver and exhibited his own paintings, sculptures and installations in Italy, Belgium, Germany, Brazil, UK and US.In 1990 he received the UE Robert Schuman Silver medal for his activities, and in the year 2000 the Millennium Painting Award in representation of his own country.
He was Artistic director of Studio Tagliapetra Glass Sculpture&Design, Murano (1994-1996) and Marco Polo Glass Gallery & Studio, Murano (2000-2005).

Alice Chilton Gallery is extremely proud to present the first solo exhibition of performance photographs in New York, of Chinese artist Zhu Ming – an artist who has been extremely important to the development of performance art in contemporary China.

Growing-up in China after the Cultural Revolution, Zhu Ming finds peace and tranquility in his bubbles – large inflatable sculptures within which one can sit and contemplate, float along the water or stand firm in a desert, creating a zone of isolation.

Zhu Ming moved to Beijing after high school, and immediately entered into performance art. One day, when he was doing laundry, he saw the bubbles from the detergent, and had the epiphany that these bubbles would be the source of his work. He sees the bubbles, which exist and quickly disappear, as a metaphor for life, from one generation to another.

“Zhu Ming’s personal and poignant ‘ bubble art ‘ reminds us all that at times illusion and reality do co-exist. Isolation can indeed be found amid chaos, and that all of life is in a constant state of transition. Expressed through the human body and physical action, performance art will most certainly continue to be one of the most important vehicles available to contemporary artists.”

Arielle Bier and Adina Bier explore the boundaries and freedoms of twinning and interconnectedness through live installation/durational performances in the gallery.

The sisters will create an encapsulating lair using webbing and suspended pods of sheet rope to perform in. Inspirations for this work include ritualistic practices such as inuit throat singing, butoh dance and nesting.

The Bier sisters have been living and working together since they moved back to Brooklyn in 2008.
